The Background Revolution

In recent times, I've discovered what I call the Background Revolution. What that means is that I've decided to draw the characters and the backgrounds for my comics separately. Of course I'm not the first person to do this sort of thing. But it's a big deal to me because I find that it actually speeds up my comic-making process. Here's how that is: I draw a backround by hand and leave it uncolored. Then I scan the background, then use a StarOffice graphics file to colorize the background by creating colored shapes that go over various elements in the background. After that, I put the shapes in transparent mode, and that's it.

Yes! The Background Revolution. It's the best thing since laser-beam-sliced bread.

Don't you know...
It's the Background Revolution...

Cartoonist glut?

I think there's a cartoonist glut. Of course that's an opinion, so I don't exactly have proof. But my experience (and the experences of others) seems to indicate that there is a glut of cartoonists. Consider the cartoon syndication example. As I understand it, cartoon syndicates only select two or three new comics a year. And they usually choose those few comics out of thousands of submissions. Thus only a tiny percentage of cartoonists will get syndicated while the vast majority will never get syndicated. You'd have much better chances winning the lotto.

I've concluded that the best way to mitigate the cartoonist glut is through the Internet. Unike a newspaper which only has room for 20 or 30 comics, the Internet has room for millions of comics. There are billions of web sites after all. But it's not quite as easy as that since you have to go through the difficulty of finding the web site or web sites that will publish your comic. Even so, you have a better chance of getting a comic published on the Internet than you have of winning the lotto. And you have a far, far, far, far better chance of getting a comic published on the Internet than you have of or getting your comic syndicated.

If not, do you know where I can find any? Thanks!

Therefore, I feel the need to ask those who are more persuasive than I am (and that's the vast majority of people) to persuade people to buy my comics and such. Just wanted to bring that up.
http://www.comicspace.com/timelike01/comics.php?action=gallery&comic_id=7333
For those who don't know (and that's most of you), Whiners is a web comic miniseries I creatred that deals with a small group of whiny cats and their human friend as they travel to other universes in search of a world where cat persecution doesn't exist. After all, cat persecution is one of the most prominent and obscene cliches in history. Whiners represents a more creative view of the cat bashing cliche in that it regards that mess as the mess that it is. Very rare in today's modern dystopia.

Tired of manga

It seems to me that a large number of comic publishers DEMAND artist who can draw in the manga style. But I have to ask, why? Wouldn't that end up making all comics look alike? And isn't a diveristy of drawing styles better than the same drawing style for all comics? Of course many insist on the manga look because it sells. I guess that's a good enough reason. But if you're tired of all comics looking alike, then that's not quite a good enough reason. Besides you can't stand out if you look like everybody else.

New Comic Strip - Critiques & Marketing Tips ?

Hi all, I'm a new member to this tribe and thank you for setting it up! :)

In the past week I've been feverishly putting together a portfolio with the intent of getting myself syndicated into local newspapers hopefully through UPS who carry Close to Home, Non-Sequitur and a few others of similar ilk. My intent is to create a surreal series with no central theme and no running story lines (Non-Sequitur has something like 3 of them). I'm really modeling it conceptually on Gary Larson's old Far Side series with some distinctions in well, obviously style of illustration. :) Larson intentionally created a world where there were no attractive people heh... which while it's funny I'm not really interested in emulating that particular gag. :) But I was a big fan of the series and I think I have a similar sense of humor. So I've got a collection of panels that I'm getting ready to submit to UPS and would be interested in any critique, etc. you might have.

For now I've got all my illustrations on a cafe press store really just for the immediate income potential because I've been programming computers since '98 and I'm trying to quit... and in the past couple months I'm discovering it's about as difficult as quitting smoking. :) I'd also be really interested in hearing any suggestions people might have of places that I can post info about my cafe press store to get it in front of people, get it blogged, etc.

So all my comic panels are up on the store here: http://www.cafepress.com/anupwardspiral/2705826

Thanks,

ike

SNAP! The Comic Arts Festival

I usually don't go to comic conventions because of the lack-luster response I usually get from comic convention patrons. But this time, I'm going to go to the SNAP! convention this October because it's being sponsored by my favorite comic book shop. As such, I feel compelled to support them in this effort. SNAP! might turn out to be another disappointment for me, but at least it'll be a disppontment from a brand new comic con.

Anyway, for details on SNAP!, go to: http://www.greenbrain.biz/SNAP!.htm

Who would be interested?

As most of you know, I started a comic book company in February 2005, and had 14 people come to my site. Now I have a regular traffic flow of 40,000+, which grows every month. Two weeks ago, I had to change hosting companies and purchase 25 times the bandwidth I had before.

I get letters asking what I did to get to this point, and I'm burning out from replying. I get letters from comic book people, real estate people, homemakers and shop keepers, asking how to improve the flow of people to their sites and make more money.

I am going to make an eBook, to sell from my site (most likely for $24-29), and wanted to give those of you here and a few other tribes the heads up on it. It will detail what I did, in what order, the exact sources/programs/tools I use, etc. Basically I want to create a detailed step-by-step map as to how I got to this point.

Though it is referring to comics, this can be applied to MOST online businesses, simply because it involves correct principles across the board.

I would like to know, by a show of posts, who would be interested in that resource?
Mostly a glorified slide show, but it's brought me a HUGE amount of traffic...and I made it at home on my own. In fact--it's still out there, being sent between people and bringing me traffic.

I have installed a new section of my comic book website, which I am trying to do on a regular basis, to promote more interest in the comic. I used a piece of software that allows for an online encyclopedia, which I turned into a 'Journal' kept by one of the main characters.

I will put new entries in on a regular basis, which will keep it growing---but I wanted to get your feedback and possible ideas for this feature. Take a look at it, read some entries, and let me know if it's interesting to you. Does it make you want to read the comic book? Does it make you curious at all? If you HAVE read the comic already (which many of you have), do you like this new feature?

Let me know.

Now, more than a decade later, there's the 2002 edition of Virgin Commandos. Anyone who wants to get in on this Virgin remake can order a copy by sending 50 cents to:
I'm 28 (Yeah, that's right sonny... I'm old) and have an associate's degree in Fine Arts Foundation (moslty drawing) and have done nothing even semi related to art with it. Sigh. I'm like a dinosaur when it comes to computer art... I'd kill for Paintshop and the knowlege to use it to color my drawings. Anyhow, if anyone cares to see my nonsense, here's my Deviantart page: http://invaderjes.deviantart.com/ Now let's draw!

Lets see. I'm 20, and I'm surrently a Biology major at UM. I'v been drawing comics since I was 12. So my trying to become a doctor is just a back up plan if my comicing doesnt work ^_^;

hmmm... heres a link to one of my most latests works. It's just a simple print my writer and I used to make flyers of our wecomic ( http://getalife.mspencer.net ). http://getalife.mspencer.net/images/edwin/prints/butterfly-final.jpg <- the art

My writer, who also happens to be an animation major, did the background and the brush effects on the edges. I did the main lineart and coloring. All done in photoshop.

I heard someone saying they wanted to take some photoshop classes. I reccomend you find yourself a copy of the program and play around with it first. All i learned to do, i learned alone. I'm sure if you got a strong hold on it, and then took a class, it would make it just the easier. I wish my silly school had a bigger art department and they offered digital art classes for non art majors *sighs*

Ok, You can call me Bibliophile. I'm 17 and currently enrolled in the most spoiled public school in the midwest. My interest tend to be geekish, such as mythology, fantasy, D&Ding, drawing, animals, programming, anthromorphics, etc. I'm not really sure what I'm going to end up doing, but I see art as possibly being a big part of it. I'm not very good, but I'm working very hard to improve my art skills. At school, I'm enrolled in Drawing and Painting 2 and plan on taking a class on photoshop usage and photography.

Say hi!

All formalities aside, I want to talk about my vision for this community ("tribe") and what I'd like to do in the future.

First off, I want this to be a place where we're all friends, so I think it would be great if we could all make a personal introduction for ourselves, and talk about our involvement in the art world.

The photo section exists for the use of all the members of the tribe, so you can upload your artwork and photos, too. ^_^

Eventually, I'd like to be able to set up events like live chats with well-known cartoonists, trips to conventions, workshops, and that kind of stuff.

So anyway, now that that stuff is out of the way, let me say that everyone is welcome to post and reply to topics, and I'd like to start out by introducing myself.

My name is Lyndse, I'm 22, and I've been interested in art since I was itty-bitty, and decided that I wanted to persue cartooning as a career at the age of 11. I took art all through my public school career, and in high school I was a member of an extra-curricular art club.

I briefly attended community college in the fall of 2001 with a major in art. Due to circumstances beyond my control (and some that were well within it), and dissatisfaction with the curriculum, I didn't even finish the semester.

However, I've continued drawing (as if I could ever stop). I currently have several very detailed ideas for comic strips, web comics, and comic books, but NO IDEA how to bring those ideas to life. This is something that throughout my artistic training I've never learned how to do: cartooning apparently isn't considered a "serious" art form, because basically I was educated in more "traditional" forms of art.

I thought that there must be others out there like myself: you know, people who want to persue cartooning as a career but really don't know where to begin. Thus, I started this tribe.

That's it for me. It's lovely to have so many new people joining the tribe: I encourage you all to post an introduction on the discussion board for yourself: talk about how you came into cartooning, your favorite mediums, and why you decided to join the tribe. Please tell us about your other interests too... I'll answer questions about myself as they arise.

Welcome to Amateur Cartoonists!

Welcome, everyone.

My name is Lyndse, and I am an amateur cartoonist. The reason I started this tribe is firstly because there were no tribes specifically catering to cartoonists, and secondly because I wanted to create a community for beginning cartoonists to become familiar with their world and become established cartoonists.

The idea here is to share our individual strengths and expertise with others who may not have that knowledge in an easy to understand, simple, "for dummies" format in order to ease those less familiar into the world of cartooning. This community will help the amateur to become expert, and the experts to help amateurs.

Also, remember if you will to please use jargon sparingly; if you must use industry or field terms, please explain for the rest of us.

Ideas for matters to be discussed here:

** Education (where the best instruction can be found, what can be learned, what should be taught)
** Employment (how to find employment in the world of cartooning, and how to find the sort of beginning jobs that could jumpstart a career in cartooning)
** Enterprize (how to make money off of our art, how to find a fan base)
** Supplies (brands, types, arguements for one tool over another)
** Technique (how to use supplies and programs to create and enhance our art)
** Technology (what technology exists for artists in the modern studio? what computer programs can be used to better assist our art? how do we share our art with the masses?)

Again: welcome all fellow cartoonists, expert and amateur. Here's to our success!
