It seems to me that a large number of comic publishers DEMAND artist who can draw in the manga style. But I have to ask, why? Wouldn't that end up making all comics look alike? And isn't a diveristy of drawing styles better than the same drawing style for all comics? Of course many insist on the manga look because it sells. I guess that's a good enough reason. But if you're tired of all comics looking alike, then that's not quite a good enough reason. Besides you can't stand out if you look like everybody else.

Thu, March 29, 2007 - 4:50 PMYeah, and I've never known anybody who had a giant bead of sweat suddenly appear in their hair when they were "confused" of all things. :)
I always rather thought diversity was much of the point of art isn't it? Boggles my mind that people (and I suspect it likely has a lot to do with Japanese culture originally) can come to another artist and say "how can I learn to create CARBON COPPIES of your work, because I really think, being a CLONE will make me STAND OUT in the market. :) Look at Gary Larson's old Far Side comic stip (which I've admittedly said I would like to be compared to), the reason it was popular is because it was unusual.
Long story short I think it's marketing / exec. types trying to get a "guarantee" of success where there is none to be had and consequently losing themselves a lot of great opportunities.
